The Project Background
I am an artist who delights in capturing the beauty of women in this age, the start of the 21st century. I am aware
that nothing lasts, certainly not in this frantic era of rapid change and stunning yearly advancement of technology.
The advent of the worldwide web and the Internet in 1995 (in the UK) opened extraordinary opportunities for attractive
women and skilled image makers to find each other to create new works of art, never witnessed before throughout
history. At their disposal were the new tools afforded by computer technology, digital cameras, 3d modelling algorithms,
fractal imagery and a plethora of electronic software tools and technological canvases never imagined. Had some
of the truly great historic artistS been alive at this time, they would have excelled - but probably their work
would have been lost. In fact, most of the women modelling today and the artists and photographer's recording them,
will discover their work is lost through the changes coming in immediate time and the further technology leaps
which are happening right now.
An image on a c.d. today, is on a dvd tomorrow, a flash card next week, an optical crystal next etc. In 20 years,
whatever image is created today will never be visible again unless it is saved again, and again, and yet again
on the next memory storage device made and in common use. Two hundred years from now, where will be the capacity
or devices to show a jpg image of today? The great oil painters in the past spent as much time studying their tools
and materials as they did creating their art. The pigments were carefully chosen, the canvasses prepared, and their
vision laid down and varnished only with time honoured laquers. The fact their work and their subjects are still
viewable today is as much down to their knowledge of materials as to their artistic skills. As an artist and a
technologist, I see the problems with immortalising our artistic work today. My project is an attempt to achieve
preservation and immortality of my own work, along with (possibly) other artists, and certainly with the beauty
and power of 100 women alive now in the UK. I hope to overcome the problems with longitivity in a transient world.
The Objectives
To create a full colour
time-enduring art book filled with imagery and content about 100 chosen women.
To create 100 time-enduring prints 19x13 inches of the chosen women which will survive in their and their kin's
hands for 200 years.
To collect details and artifacts of the chosen 100 women to record their lives and physical presence and to commit
these elements to a time vault.
To secure the artifacts, copies of the books and prints, into a container designed to last 200 years but with a
view to it being opened in 140 years.
To record its location with the International and UK time-capsule registering institutes.
To place archival material under ISBN registration with the 5 document holding libraries in the UK.
